Classification 3

Shelfmarks consist of the category to which the books belong followed by consecutive numbers. Thus within a shelfmark category, the later a book was acquired or catalogued the higher the number.

All Literary Studies shelfmarks contain shelfmark elements indicating whether they describe primary texts or secondary literature:

  • primary texts: the book's number is preceded by the letter A
  • secondary literature (criticism of literary works; scholarly works on literary texts): the book's number is preceded by the letter B

Shelfmarks based on this classification do not indicate whether an item is located in the open access area of the library or in the closed stacks. Therefore finding out about an item's location is as important as establishing its shelfmark.
