BIOSIS PREVIEWS
"Biosis Previews" emerged from the databases "Biological Abstracts" and "Biological Abstracts RRM" (CD-Rom). Web edition from 1990 onwards. "Biosis Previews" is a comprehensive index to life sciences and biomedical research worldwide including: journals, meetings, patents, and books.

ISI Journal Citation Reports [JCR]
"The Journal Citation Reports is an
essential, comprehensive and unique resource for journal evaluation, using
citation data drawn from over 8,400 scholarly and technical journals worldwide.
The journal impact
factor is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article"
in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor will help
you evaluate a journal’s relative importance, especially when you compare it
to others in the same field.
The impact factor is calculated
by dividing the number of current citations to articles published in the two
previous years by the total number of articles published in the two previous

Click "Suche" (search).
"Alle Felder" (all fields) means, that there is only one search field and you can use all terms, e.g. author or title, keywords or the publisher for your search.
For a specific search key in the author for "Person" (person), the title of a book for "Titel" (titel) or a certain topic for "Schlagwort" (keyword).
Ex. 1:
You would like to find the book "Moderne Genetik" by the author "Brown". Key in the search field "moderne genetik brown", adjust to "Alle Felder" (all fields) and click on "Suchen" (search). The retrieval shows two hits (one from 1993, one from 1999). To see the stock records from 1999, click on number 2. In order to obtain the shelfmark and the shelf classification click on "Fb Biologie". As this is not a lending library, you can't borrow the book and have to read it in the reading room of the library.
Click on "Hauptbibliothek" to get the stock record of the main library. Click on "Ausleihe" (lending) to order the book filling in the identification number of your library card and use your birthday (YYYYMMDD) as password. The book can be borrowed here for one month.
Click on "Lehrbuchsammlung" (textbook collection) to see the stock record of the textbook collection. Go there directly, take the book out of the shelf and book it by yourself. Ordering via internet is not required. The lending period is 2 months. Click on "Bibliotheksinfo" (library info) to receive information about the library such as the telephone number, location etc.
Ex. 2:
You would like to find Ph.D. theses in genetics. Key in "Alle Felder" (all fields) or "Schlagwort" (keyword) "Genetik" and click on "Suchen" (search). To filter the hits click on "Filtern" (filter) and finally "Dissertationen" (Ph.D. thesis).
If you only want to search in the biology library opac (Fb Biologie Opac: mnemonic A087), click on "Katalogauswahl" (catalogue selection) and choose Fb Biologie A087. Search there as described above.
If you want to know which books you can find at a certain shelf location, click on "Indexsuche" (index search) and choose "Signatur" (shelfmark). There you key in "II-2" for the location for genetics and click on "Suchen" (search). For the locations (e.g. II-2 of genetics, IV-6-B of protozoa etc..) we refer you to the shelf classification of the biology library. Another search strategy is to search for the combination of subject headings. Click on "Indexsuche" (index search) and choose "Schlagwortkette" (combination of subject headings). Key in "apoptosis" or "apoptose" and click on "Suchen" (search). You'll obtain all books which have been indexed with the keyword apoptosis, click on the combination of subject headings to find more information about the book.

Ex.:
You would like to know which Austrian libraries offer the book "Brown: Moderne Genetik".
Click on "Suchen" (search) and key in "brown moderne genetik" in "Alle Felder" (all fields). Click on "Start" and in the retrieval on "2", to receive the result of 1999. You obtain a list of libraries in Austria, holding the book. If you click on "Bestand" (stock record), you can find out the shelfmarks of the book. Clicking on the library you are informed about the library´s adress, phone number etc.

Ex.:
You are looking for a book by Charles Darwin entitled "Der Ausdruck der Gemütsbewegungen" from 1872.
1. You are searching the book in the Opac - if you don´t receive any results
2. Go into the old author index from 1500 to 1931.
Here you click on "D" for Darwin. Zoom alphabetically till you get the card with Darwin. Click on "Vollanzeige" (full record). Note the shelfmark (I-100.805).
Start the Opac, click on "Indexsuche" (indexsearch) and choose "Signatur" (shelfmark). Key in the shelfmark as follows: I or II hyphen number without point and comma. You can order the book as usual (also those with indication "ZZZLeer"). Books with "ZZZLeer" have been worked into the Opac with incomplete bibliographic information (only shelfmarks). If you can't find the desired book in the opac please come to the library and fill in a yellow lending form.
Catalogues of the special libraries = "UBW Institute Nominalkatalog 1972-1991" (Departments - Author Index).
Ex.:
You are looking for the book "Darwin Evolutionstheorie". Click on "D" for Darwin. Zoom alphabetically till you get the card with Darwin. Click on "List down". On the card you find a number in a ring. Click on "Konkordanz der Sigel" to obtain the library belonging to the number. In this case it is the Academic Library of Philosophy.

Ex.:
You are looking for the book "Brown: Moderne Genetik" in German libraries.
Click on "Most important German library catalogues". Key in "moderne genetik" in "Titlewords" and "brown in "Author". Scroll down and click on "Start". As an example click on "Bibliotheksverbund Bayern" on the book of 1999. Scroll down to find the stock records of the union catalogue. For the shelfmark click on the list below "Anzeige der Exemplare" (view examples). You can order the book in our department of inter-library loans.
Book search synopsis (national and international).
1. Check if the book is available at the VU library or at one of the special libraries (Opac).
2. For books published before 1989, search in the old author and subject index catalogues of the VU library. Key in the shelfmark in the Opac. If there is no result, search in the departments author index.
3. Check if the book is available within the Austrian union catalogue. If a library outside of Vienna holds the book use our department of inter-library loans.
4. If the book is not available in Austria, search in the KVK and contact our department of inter-library loans.

Click on the title to visit the journal´s homepage. Browse the content for your required volume. Generally, articles are available in "html" or "pdf". Choose "pdf" for saving on disc or printing the article.

The retrieval contains numbered journals. For the full dataset of every journal click on the corresponding number. On this site the holding libraries are listed up. For information on the stock record click on "Bestand" (stock record).
A record "27.1984 –" means that the journal is available since volume 27, 1984 onward.
A record "27.1984 – 29.1986" means that only three volumes (volume 27, 28 and 29) are available.
