The Historical Studies Library was established by merging the library of the Department of History (founded in 1872) and the library of the Department of Social and Economic History. The Library’s holdings currently comprise about 150,000 items.
Our holdings cover the following main subject areas: modern global history, history of science, women’s and gender history as well as economic and social history. The regional focus of our holdings is on Austria, Central and Western Europe as well as the Americas. There are separate special libraries for ancient history, East European history, contemporary history and other special literature at the University of Vienna.
