History of origin:

The Departmental Library for Cultural and Social Anthropology was founded in 1929 as the library of the former Institute for Ethnology (later renamed "Ethnology, Cultural and Social Anthropology", the current name was narrowed down to "Cultural and Social Anthropology").

In 1986 the Federal Ministry for Science and Research declared the library a decentralized department of the University Library of Vienna by decree. As part of today’s library and archive system at the University of Vienna, its holdings (monographs, journals, series, microfilms, and videos) include around 80,000 titles (as of 2022).
