Using the Library

The Theater Film and Media Studies Library (formerly the Departmental Library for Theatre Studies) was established in 1983 as a department of the Vienna University Library and is open to the public. The Special Library is subject to the Library Regulations of the University of Vienna.

Please consult the websites of the University of Vienna and the University Library for further information.

Cloakroom

A cloakroom key is issued at the information desk. Jackets, bags, rucksacks and similar items can be locked in the cloakroom lockers.

Cloakrooms are compulsory in the reading room.

Reading room

The reading room contains the library's reference collection, which can only be used on site: Reference works, encyclopaedias and bibliographies, journals of the current year and term reference collections. The reading room also offers space for PC workstations, a video viewing area and a research area for the ORF archive.

The reading room is a quiet area and has air conditioning. The consumption of food and open drinks is not permitted here.

The lounge is located in front of the reading room. This offers space for breaks and relaxed, semi-quiet working.

Individual workstations

A total of 6 individual workstations are available in the reading room. These can be used in the reading room without a reservation. Each workstation has power sockets and is acoustically shielded from the reading room by half-height partition walls.

Open access area

The library has an open stacks area. Books can be removed from the shelves by hand by indicating their location and shelf number. It is not possible to order these books. With a few exceptions, all books can be borrowed at the information desk. Books that cannot be borrowed can be used on site in the reading room.

Shelving
  • Open access green: Film Studies
  • Open access blue: Media studies
  • Open access yellow: Theatre Studies
  • Open access Red: Interdisciplinary literature
  • Open access White: University publications

In addition to the open stacks, there are also some books in the stacks. Books in the stacks can be ordered via u:search with a valid library account. This also applies to books that are currently on loan.

Please place books that are used in the library and not borrowed on the shelves provided for this purpose.

Printing/copying/scanning

The u:print device can be used with a charged and valid u:card. It is possible to send print jobs to the device or to print via USB stick. Scanning is free of charge.

A book scanner is available in the library. Scanning is free of charge and possible up to A3 format. A USB stick must be brought along as a storage medium. The scanner offers the possibility of text recognition. When reproducing, the provisions of $$42ff. of the Copyright Act must be observed.

Computers

There are research PCs in the entrance area of the library and PC workstations in the library reading room. At these computers it is possible to access the electronic resources of the University Library without a login. The LibreOffice programmes can be used for working. In addition, the computers in the reading room offer access to an extensive package from Adobe (Adobe Creative Cloud). If you do not have your own Adobe account, you will need to create an account via AcadCloud: Instructions for ordering an Adobe account for students.

Seat reservation

No seat reservation is required for the reading room. We recommend making a reservation for the use of the group study rooms, the research area for the ORF archive and the video viewing area.

Scan orders

The departmental library is happy to accept and process digitisation orders for individual articles or chapters. Please use the corresponding digitisation service order form and send it to fb.tfm.ub@univie.ac.at.
