Preparations are currently being made to move the holdings in the main reading room. Around 2.7 million books will soon be moving from the stacks of the Main Library to their new home: a modern depot in Floridsdorf.
Around 80,000 volumes are currently being pre-sorted in the large reading room. The prerequisite for a smooth relocation is the correct order in which the holdings are packed by the haulage company - in special book transport trolleys, not boxes. This is how they are brought to the new depot so that they can be re-shelved according to their shelfmarks. With such a large collection, books can only be searched for and found by their shelfmark. If something gets mixed up and is not in its place, the chances of finding it again are very slim.
These are the works that were placed on the open shelves in the large reading room, the catalogue rooms and other locations. In preparation for removal by the haulage company, all these books would have to be sorted according to their shelfmarks among the holdings in the stacks. However, as the shelves in the stacks are completely full, this ‘interim sorting’ has to take place in the large reading room.
The work in the reading room is almost complete. The relocation process can then begin in November.
