Available workplaces when the German, Dutch and Scandinavian Studies Library is closed

Alternative library workplaces

The closest alternative workplaces during shortened opening hours are usually the Large Reading Room and the catalogue room of the Main Library. The Main Library has longer opening hours during periods when there are no classes. It is located in the same building (right wing, 1st floor; building plan ).

In addition, you can find numerous other libraries with different opening hours during periods when there are no classes and the summer holidays at various locations of the University of Vienna. Please check the current opening hours and Regulations for the Use of the Libraries of the University of Vienna directly on the website of the relevant library before your visit.

Alternative study and work spaces in the Main Building

Students can use the covered atrium in courtyard 7 and the Student Space for working and studying . Both are located on the basement level of the left wing of the building and are freely accessible at all times during the opening hours of the Main Building .

You can find further study, work and communication rooms  at many university locations. The computer rooms of the Vienna University Computer Center (ZID)  are also available at various locations for you to work on the computer.

Returning books when the German, Dutch and Scandinavian Studies Library is closed

Borrowing items at the Main Library

You can return books and media from the German, Dutch and Scandinavian Studies Library also at the lending service of the Main Library where you can also pay reminder fees.

Information desk at the Main Library

When the lending service is closed, you can return books at the information desk in front of the Large Reading Room of the Main Library.

Book return boxes

You can also find two book return boxes in the Main Building of the University of Vienna : One is located in front of the entrance to the foyer of the Main Library on the second floor. A second box is located in the Audimax corridor next to the ATM terminal (basement level).

The return boxes are emptied several times a day. Under certain circumstances, however, the items deposited may not be returned until the next opening day. In any case, you will receive a confirmation e-mail as soon as the books have been returned. If you do not receive confirmation that the item has been returned, please send an e-mail to entlehnung.ub@univie.ac.at.

Non-due days

Books are never due for return on weekends, public holidays and all other days when the special library is closed. During the opening hours of the German, Dutch and Scandinavian Studies Library, we recommend that you return the books directly at the counter to ensure that they are available to other users quickly again.
