Lending Services

To borrow books from the Library, you need a library card. For all regular students of the University of Vienna their u:card also serves as library card. Please make sure to validate the u:card after receiving it at one of the corresponding u:card terminals.

Employees of the University of Vienna must also accept the library regulations in u:space before the u:card receives its additional function as a library card. Employees who do not yet have a u:card must first oder an u:card.

All other library users, including members of other universities, can apply for their library card (u:card) online in a few steps.

If you have any problems or questions regarding the library card, please contact the borrowing department of the main library or bibliotheksausweis.ub@univie.ac.at.

Reserving

You can reserve books that are currently borrowed by someone else. You will receive a notification e-mail as soon as the book has been returned to the special library and is ready to collect. We keep books you reserved ready to collect for 5 working days.

Requesting

You have to request books from closed stacks (holdings kept in closed stacks, academic theses, Scandinavian studies items, items kept at the Schmidt-Dengler Library) in advance via u:search (or via order form in the Departmental Library at the Information Desk). You can take books kept at the open-shelf area (open-shelf areas: room 38-42, reading room) directly from the shelves. You cannot reserve or request them.

Items that may not be borrowed

You may not borrow reference works, dictionaries, periodicals and old books. Please see the relevant details on u:search.

Academic research collections, projects

Special terms and conditions for borrowing apply to research collections and projects at the University of Vienna, with loan periods of up to two years. The name of the person who has borrowed the book or the location of the book is specified in the online catalogue to allow other users to access the item. These must be kept in the relevant subunit of the University of Vienna.

Reminder fees and overdue charges

If you fail to return books on time, we block your account and send you a reminder that is subject to a charge (cf. reminder fees).
